Most travel nurses work with travel nurse agencies which send them on assignments. You can specify how far you are willing to travel for a job. For example, if you want to stay close to home, you could be a nurse who fills in for RNs who are ill or unable to make it to work within a 30-mile radius. Maternity leave is another situation where fill-in nurses are often used. If you're a bit more adventurous you can request assignments in other cities, states and sometimes even other countries. The RN who travels long distances is usually an adventure seeker, without a spouse or kids waiting at home.
If you do have a spouse and/or kids at home, you can still be a traveling nurse – just limit how far you are willing to travel as described above. You can become an RN by attending nursing school at a local college or university, obtaining your Associate's degree and passing the state exam. If you are already a registered nurse there is nothing you need to do except sign up with agencies that place RNs in temporary traveling jobs. You may be called upon for a day or much longer, depending on the circumstances.
A traveling registered nurse may receive a bonus for signing up for particular assignments. Not to mention, his or her salary may be higher than that of a traditional registered nurse with equivalent education and experience because of the willingness to travel. And, the majority of jobs for traveling nurses come with good benefits as well. There will always be travel nursing jobs to fill, so this is a career area with plenty of opportunities. Even if you hadn't thought of becoming a traveling RN, consider what it would be like to take your nursing career on the road. You can start by contacting some travel nurse companies in your area or online.
